Before a Session
- Check the scheduling platform for shifts—they will be posted there.
- All workshop scripts, risk assessments, and any relevant slides are available online. Read through these before shadowing a session.
- You will have the opportunity to shadow a session before delivering it on your own. If needed, a team member can observe your first delivery to provide support.
- Everyone has their own way of learning a script—feel free to ask colleagues for tips.
- Familiarize yourself with the topic if it’s unfamiliar. Don’t worry if you can’t answer a question—be honest and suggest the learner explore it further.
Term-Time Routine
- Arrive in the morning, store your belongings, and collect any necessary equipment such as radios, passes, or classroom/theatre keys.
- Arrive at your session location before the scheduled start time; the session setup will usually be ready for you.
- Typical school sessions run at set times throughout the day.
- Team members will alert you when a school group is on the way and can assist if you need to locate them.
- Introduce yourself to the group and give a safety briefing before entering the room.
- Ask the teacher about the class’s prior knowledge and any specific needs so you can tailor the session.
- Sessions typically last 45–60 minutes. Aim to start on time, but adapt as needed.
After a Session
- Consider asking the group three reflective questions:
- Did you learn something today?
- Did you review or reinforce something you already knew?
- Did you have fun?
- Ensure teachers know where to go next.
- Notify the relevant team if groups are heading to lunch or moving between activities.
- Return all equipment and keys to the designated area.
- Shifts generally end in the early afternoon.
School Holidays
- Shift timings may vary depending on activities or shows.
- Weekend shifts are usually unsupervised, so ensure you are familiar with your responsibilities. Support can be arranged for your first time delivering a session.
- For theatre shows and activities, you may be provided tools (e.g., clickers) to manage participant numbers.
Other Tips
- Know the location of toilets, as visitors may ask.
- Don’t hesitate to ask for help from the team—they are there to support you.
- In case of a medical emergency, follow the standard protocol and contact the first aider or designated safety personnel.
